Shira Route

Overview
The Shira Route begins at high altitude on the Shira Plateau, accessed by vehicle transfer rather than a gradual forest approach. It joins the Lemosho and Machame routes across the plateau and offers expansive views of the western glaciers from day one. Because the ascent starts above 3,600 metres, it suits experienced trekkers who have previously acclimatised at altitude.

Why Book This Route
High Start
The Shira Route begins with a vehicle transfer to 3,600m, skipping the lower forest section entirely. You start above the clouds with immediate views across the volcanic plateau, a dramatic opening to the climb.
Western Traverse
Shira shares the same spectacular western traverse as the Lemosho Route, crossing the ancient caldera and ascending via the Lava Tower. The scenery across the plateau is expansive and varied.
Experienced Climbers
Because the route starts at altitude, it suits trekkers who have previously been above 3,000m and know how their body handles elevation. If you have altitude experience and want a direct western approach, Shira is a strong choice.

Difficulty
The Shira Route is moderate overall but starts at 3,600m, so your body is immediately dealing with altitude from day one. The Barranco Wall and midnight summit push are the main physical challenges. Previous altitude experience is recommended.
Food
Our head chef prepares three freshly cooked meals a day on the mountain, designed to keep you fuelled at altitude. Expect fresh fruit, vegetables, and local Tanzanian dishes like Njegere and Machalari. Vegetarian, vegan, and allergy-friendly options are available. Just let us know when you book.
Accomodation
You will spend two nights at a boutique hotel in Arusha, either the African Tulip or the five-star Mt Meru Hotel, on a bed and breakfast basis. On the mountain, you sleep in high-altitude four-season tents on a twin-sharing basis, with a solo tent available for an additional fee. A mess tent with tables and chairs is provided for meals.
Transport
All transfers are included. Airport pickup from JRO or ARK, hotel-to-gate mountain transfers, and return airport drop-off. We use high-standard vehicles and experienced drivers throughout.
